Photo of Valentines Painting

Printmaking with SOLARPLATE is a simple approach and safer alternative to traditional etching and relief printing. SOLARPLATE is a prepared, light-sensitive polymer surface on a steel backing for artists to produce fine prints. Since Dan Welden's development of the process in the 1970s, printmakers, painters, photographers, and art teachers interested in multiple impressions have found printmaking with SOLARPLATE an exciting adventure. All one needs is inspiration, a graphic image created on a transparent film (acetate or glass), sun or UV light, and ordinary tap water, and the process is ready to begin. Both positives and negatives can be utilized. Being photographic in nature, SOLARPLATE incorporates a broader range of techniques than any other printing medium.

During Dan Welden’s 50 year career as an artist and master printmaker he has shown his work in more than 80 one-person exhibits and over 600 group exhibitions across the United States and in many other countries. As an original pioneer of safer and greener methods, he has been in the forefront of printmaking without the use of acids or other dangerous chemicals.

Line and Mass: The Figure and Portrait Explored in Drawing and Painting
Registration Deadline: August 30
This workshop will explore both the organized and elegant manner of classical drawing, and the dynamic, fresh approach of alla prima painting. Though each style has a distinctive character, together they provide the artist with a more complete understanding of artistic technique. The first day will focus on drawing methods with an emphasis on form and anatomy. The final two days will concentrate on the spirited technique of alla prima, which will center on color and paint dynamics. Demonstrations will be given each day that will illustrate each approach.
